One of the biggest questions that is asked whenever an anesthetic
process is recommended is: "HOW IS MY PET MONITORED
DURING ANESTHESIA?"
We are proud at Northside about our newest acquisition for
patient monitoring. We have invested in a Mindray 9000
Veterinary multi parameter patient monitor. This means that
during your pets anesthetic period we will be monitoring an
electrocardiogram, saturated oxygen, pulse rate, respiratory rate
and temperature, and blood pressure.
An electrocardiogram(ECG) measures the electrical activity
with in the heart, our monitor is capable of monitoring for
arrhythmias during anesthesia. Saturated oxygen is a measure of
oxygenation of the hemoglobin in the blood. The oxygen saturation
should stay above 90% during the anesthetic event, this is closely
watched. Pulse rate is the beats per minute of the heart and each
species should stay with in a normal rate during anesthesia.
Respiratory rate is the breathes per minute, once again there are
well known normals that are imputed into the monitor for each
species.
Hypothermia can be a problem during anesthesia, every animal
is placed on a circulating warm water heating pad during anesthesia,
then temperature is maintained in normal limits. By maintaining
body temperature in normal limits the time for recovery from
anesthesia is decreased. This means your pet wakes up quickly.
Fluctuations in blood pressure can cause anesthetic complications,
our new monitor continuously measures blood pressure so that minute
changes can be noticed and fixed.
THIS STATE OF THE ART MONITOR ALLOWS US TO FAR EXCEED THE INDUSTRY STANDARDS FOR PATIENT MONITORING. THE PARAMETERS ARE MAINTAINED THROUGH A TRAINED TECHNICIAN WHO IS DEDICATED TO YOUR PETS WELL BEING DURING THE ANESTHETIC EVENT. IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING OUR SURGICAL PROTOCOLS PLEASE ASK AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS.
